As usual, the Virgin's cape shelters a crowd of supplicants, in this case segregated into men on the left and women on the right. Often it is the Virgin whose extended arms hold the cape around the supplicants; in this case, it is a pair of angels who do so. The dark cape with its white lining effectively separates the angels in Heaven above.
